Gilmer, the seat of Upshur County, is a prosperous town near 1,010-acre Lake Gilmer. It is served by State Highways 49 and 300, and US Highway 271, between I-20 and I-30, about 39 miles northeast of Tyler and 120 miles east of Dallas. You can also enjoy the waters of Lake Gilmer, Lake Gladewater, Bob Sandlin Lake, Lake Cypress and the Lake O' the Pines.

In Gilmer and in Upshur County, we truly are nostalgic about our past, and excited about our future.
In its early years, Gilmer served as a cotton-ginning center and had as many as
6 gins in operation - one continued until the 1950s. A quarantine that had been placed on sweet potatoes after an infestation of weevils was lifted in 1935 and the thankful people of Gilmore have been celebrating it ever since with their Yamboree.
